Packing tips for Bocas del Toro

When our guests receive a final confirmation from us regarding their stay, we include the following list of suggested items for them to pack:

  • Rain jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • After sun lotion
  • Bug repellant
  • Water shoes or tennis shoes which can get wet (for hiking)
  • Long pants & lightweight long sleeve shirt for jungle hiking
  • Lightweight long sleeve shirt for water activities – in case of too much sun
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses

Most of our guests remember to bring everything on the list except for two important items – a rain jacket and the proper shoes to take on the jungle.

You need to bring a rain jacket when you are visiting the rain forest. No matter what time of year you visit, you are likely to encounter a rain shower. Most of the time we do not let the rain stop us from having fun, which is why we want you to be prepared. If you don’t have a rain jacket then you are not as likely to want to go out in the rain. Our rain isn’t cold so we can do many of our excursions like hiking, kayaking and even snorkeling during a light shower.

Given that we are in the rainforest, even if you do not encounter a daytime rain, you may encounter the effects of a rain on the trail. Much of our rain happens at night which means that it may not directly affect your daytime activities, but it can affect them indirectly in the form of a wet or muddy trail. For all but the basic walk around the lodge property, you need to wear something on your feet besides flip-flops. Flip-flops are great for dinner each night, for a walk down to the dock or even a trip to the beach. When you are heading out on the trail a good pair of running shoes or water shoes will make for a better experience than will a pair of flip-flops.
